Fooled Again

The Demon Lover: A NovelThe Demon Lover
Book #1 (Dec 27, 2011)

If you guessed, like I did, that this was just about a demon lover or a PNR, you would be wrong. And if you think you can guess what ultimately happens, you will probably be mistaken. There are quite a few twists and turns throughout, that I'm sorry I initially stereotyped this book as just a fairly well written sleepy tale for a weekend diversion. After about a quarter of the way through, I found that it was actually much more. The book gets increasingly interesting and more complex as the book progresses, and you can't help but get sucked in.

An extremely smooth and very easy-well written read, that I would recommend to any UF or Fantasy lover. A continuation was alluded to, but it didn't leave too many loose ends or anything that would be construed as a cliffhanger. This is currently the only book listed under the pen Juliet Dark, who is actually seasoned author, Carol Goodman. I'll be watching out for more to come.

Written in first person POV, the beginning starts off interesting, but a little sluggish and not very original, with Callie McFay accepting a teaching position at a remote college in Fairwick, NY. Her nightly visits by a spectral or spirit from her childhood, returns when she first arrives at Fairwick for the job interview. After settling in, she quickly finds her nights occupied by the same erotic force. Not believing the visits to be real, she dismisses the occurrences as an overactive imagination and in response to her cooling long distant relationship.

But Callie soon realizes that her dreams are alarmingly real. Then Callie makes another startling discovery: He’s not the only mythical creature in Fairwick. As the tenured witches of the college and the resident fairies in the surrounding woods prepare to cast out the incubus, Callie must accomplish something infinitely more difficult—banishing this demon lover from her heart.

It is always difficult to gauge how much to reveal about a book, but suffice it to say, this synopsis only summarizes the beginning. There are some pretty steamy scenes, but I would not classify this as a PNR.  Without giving too much away, this book has a little of everything, from witches to fairies, and of course demons.  There is also a story within the story, as Callie reads from original manuscripts, she finds squirreled away in her new home's attic, written by her favorite romance author and the house's previous occupant.

Warning: Sexual Content

This book does not release until late December.  I received an advance copy via Netgalley.
